The Animator Letters Project

Back in May, an aspiring animator named Willie Downs sent me an invitation to contribute to his Animator Letters Project (a hand-written snail mail invitation, no less!).  Willie is planning on compiling the letters he receives into a book, and while he's only gotten a few responses (my buddy Aaron was the first to respond), they're all fairly inspiring!

I wasn't going to post the letter until Willie published his book, but Letters of Note put it up on their site, and I've been getting the most awesome and uplifting feedback from people. So here it is for anyone who needs a word of encouragement today.

If you're a professional animator, please consider contributing to The Animator Letters Project. It only takes a few minutes to hand-write a letter, but you never know who you may inspire!

And in case you can't read my chicken-scratch, here's the transcript from Letters of Note:

PIXAR

To Whom it May Inspire,

I, like many of you artists out there, constantly shift between two states. The first (and far more preferable of the two) is white-hot, "in the zone" seat-of-the-pants, firing on all cylinders creative mode. This is when you lay your pen down and the ideas pour out like wine from a royal chalice! This happens about 3% of the time.

The other 97% of the time I am in the frustrated, struggling, office-corner-full-of-crumpled-up-paper mode. The important thing is to slog diligently through this quagmire of discouragement and despair. Put on some audio commentary and listen to the stories of professionals who have been making films for decades going through the same slings and arrows of outrageous production problems.

In a word: PERSIST.

PERSIST on telling your story. PERSIST on reaching your audience. PERSIST on staying true to your vision. Remember what Peter Jackson said, "Pain is temporary. Film is forever." And he of all people should know.

So next time you hit writer's block, or your computer crashes and you lose an entire night's work because you didn't hit save (always hit save), just remember: you're never far from that next burst of divine creativity. Work through that 97% of murky abyssmal mediocrity to get to that 3% which everyone will remember you for!

I guarantee you, the art will be well worth the work!

Your friend and mine,

Austin Madison

Brave Trailer Premieres Online!

This is one princess who won't need saving. Tha mi ag iarraidh briosgaid!

To hear some thoughts on Brave, Cars 2, and much more, listen to the Animation Fascination's podcast with Chris Chua and myself.

Chris and I will explain exactly why we're wearing kilts in the picture below.

Kilt Fridays

At the end of each week, it's kilt or be kilt in the Brave anim department. I don't know if you can see the subheading, but that's the Revised 3rd Edition of So You're Going to Where a Kilt. It's important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends, y'know.

In other Pixar news, Disney just released this image from  a scene I animated in Cars 2, introducing Luigi's relatives: Mama and Uncle Topolino!

School's Out

Paul Mendoza and I teach an animation class at the Academy of Art University in SF, and Tuesday was the last night of class. It's hard teaching animation for just one semester, because you just start getting a sense of everyone's style and you have to kick them out the door.

I'm not worried for our students, though. They were all MASTERS OF ANIMATION by the time we were done with them. I think Dong-Jin (pictured below) was getting a little tired of her nickname, Dong-Jin & Dragons, anyway.

If you're a student and you're looking to get your work out there, submit your film(s) to TR!CKSTER's Student Animation Film Festival. That's right, the creator-centric convention welcomes comic artists and filmmakers alike! So dust off those DVDs and send em in!

While I'm sharing photos, here's my friend Sean Feeley's entry for this year's Redbull Soapbox Derby. If you're in the LA area this weekend, swing by and root for the JP Jeep. They're bound to get major style pts; this baby has some serious rex appeal.

Redbull Soapbox Derby....maybe that's why dinosaurs evolved into birds. Redbull gives you wings, right?

Storm of Steel: The Ute'wehi

The ute'WHAT? Ute'wehi. Apparently it's alien for badass. This illustration was commissioned by my pals over at Zombiesmith. Based on a design from  Aaron Brown's line of miniatures, "Storm of Steel".

Also by the fine folks of Zombiesmith, this rad Quar short:

CHADES CHALLENGE XLVII: EVOLUTIONARY PARLIAMENT

"A parliament is nothing less than a big meeting of more or less idle people." -Walter Bagehot

Sorry this post is late, I was on vacation last week. Turns out today is perfect timing,  though, what with the Rise of the Planet of the Apes trailer premiering yesterday. Bad title, cool trailer.

If you designed any evolutionary parliament designs (everyone is invited to contribute), leave me a comment with a link to your image and I'll post it below. If not, join us next week (April 22nd) for:

CHADES CHALLENGE XLVIII:
THE EASTER BUNNY

If you enjoy these Chades Callenges and would like a direct character design critique from me (or other far more talented industry professionals), check out my buddy Mario Furmanczyk's animation industry forum AnimatedBuzz.com.

Mario's been keeping this site up since we were at CalArts, and it's developed into an awesome Facebook/Animation Mentor hybrid. Get cheap critiques, post filmwork, portfolios, and reels, or just chew the fat with your fellow animators.

Micro Rex Zoetrope

In case you missed my zoetrope at the Oakland Airport's Pixar Exhibit last Autumn, Trip Park was kind enough to assemble the images for a youtube clip.

Micro Rex is a character I created for the Super Big Micro Show and, despite being an installation for the Pixar exhibit, is not a Pixar-affiliated character.

It's not the greatest walk-cycle in the world, but not bad for being animated in photoshop without a pencil tester.

And now for something completely different:

Today is the last round of theatre sports for Pixar's improv troupe, The Improvibles. Our Improv-Dome tournament has been going on for quite a while. Rivalries have fostered, friendships torn asunder. Who will stand triumphant? The audience shall decide!!!

I always tell animation students that drawing (particularly observational drawing from life) is the key to growing as an animator. I'd say acting is the second most essential tool in the animator's survival kit. Improv is a great way to hone performance skills, delve into character motivations and scene structure, and gain on-the-spot brainstorming skills all while making a complete ass out of one's self.

CHADES CHALLENGE XLV:
INTERSTELLAR TYRANTS

I was strapped for time this week, so I jotted this interstellar tyrant on a complimentary notepad handed out at an educational conference earlier today.

It was a long conference, so I had plenty of time to draw.

Rest assured, I was listening the entire time I was sketching this guy.

The conference was in Sacramento, so I think I was channeling the former governator for this particular space fascist.

Here I am in the conference room with my old animation teacher, Shawn Sullivan. Thirteen years ago, Shawn gave me my first animation lessons at Sheldon High School. Now that I am a teacher myself, he's giving me my first lessons in the field of education...

...and power tools. Thaumatropes were handed out to everyone who attended our conference. Shawn never settles for the "ordinary" animation methods. This is his Power Thaumatrope.

If you designed any interstellar tyrants, leave me a comment with a link to your image and I'll post it below. If not, join us March 18th for Chades Challenge XLVI: Cheesy Graverobbers!

One Dream Studios Interview
A follow-up to the "How to draw Rex" tutorial I posted last week. The interviewer is my highschool friend Vic Jimenez of One Dream Studios, and we talk about the greatest animator of all time, the best animated feature of all time, and how to get into animation if you never made it to college.

Oh, and sorry about the blasphemy at the 1:13 mark, I get a little carried away talking about animation cycles.

Happy New Year!
What better way to kickoff 2011 than with a bit of iPadimation? This was doodled on Animation Creator HD, a must-have for anyone with an iPad and a serious animation addiction.

My New Year's resolution is to finish all the projects I started in 2010 (and prior). For me, creation is impossible without inspiration, so I thought I'd share my top ten most inspiring discoveries of 2010. Now some of these aren't necessarily new, but they were new to me, so lay off.

1. Comic Con
2. Scuba-diving
3. Black Swan
4. Flogging Molly
5. Nerd Fighters
6. How to Boil Water
7. The Venture Bros
8. Red Letter Media
9. The Trip
10. The Jeff Lewis 5 Minute Comedy Hour

Captain's Log
Part I: Shoving Off

With funds secured and crew assembled, this weekend marks the launch of my new animated short, Nail'd. The project is being produced independently of Pixar with some old friends from back home in Sacramento, including my highschool animation teacher, Shawn Sullivan. I'll be working with Shawn's current students, hopefully giving them a taste of what the film-making process is like. And if my previous student films are any indication, we're in for some stormy seas!

Our local newspaper, The Elk Grove Citizen, was kind enough to cover the story.

Pencil to Pixel

If you're travelling out of Oakland Airport, make sure to stop by the Pencil to Pixel exhibit, where I've got a zoetrope installation along with Pete Docter, Angus MacLane, Cat Hicks, Don Crum, and Kevin O'hara. The exhibit is in Terminals 1 and 2, and will be up from now till February 11, 2011. Mine's the zoetrope with the dinosaur (not a Pixar character, unfortunately).

The exhibition coincides with the Pixar exhibit at the Oakland Museum. In fact, before you head out of Oakland, make sure to stop by the museum first.

Rex Appeal

The Oakland Airport is putting together a Pixar exhibit in October and a few of us animators were invited to contribute strips of animation for the zoetrope display. We were given the option to draw original characters instead of sticking with the Pixar catalogue, so I did this baby rex walk cycle.

Support the Arts
Shawn Sullivan's animation program at Sheldon High School got me where I am today (which isn't too shabby of a place at all). Unfortunately, that program is in dire need of funding. You can help out by going to lots2give.com and voting for this horribly embarrassing film. This is actually the first piece of animation I ever did, way back in my Freshman year of high school.

The film may not look like much, but student films like this pave the road for young artists to become animators. Please take a moment to vote for Sheldon's program so that Shawn can keep mentoring future filmmakers. Thank you!

My contribution to the Dave Pimentel and Jeff Snow's Drawing of the Day game. Today's theme is "Buffalo Chicken." Here are some other excellent contributions!
