Amateur Armature

The beta version of my horror-themed boardgame, Camp Grizzly, is coming to Kubla Con this weekend. Our masked killer, Otis, is doing a little pre-show killing to warm-up for his debut. Knock 'em dead, big guy!

If you'd like to create your own horrific clay-mation, Here's a handy how-to:

It's helpful to keep a toolbox full of clays and armatures so you're ready to animate at a moment's notice. I recommend an oil-based modelling clay like Plastilina.

Next, twist yourself up an armature with soft aluminum modelling wire and prep some "guts." Guts are used to build up the form around your armature without wasting valuable colored clay. I usually recycle Plastilina from old animation to form the guts (hence the cool, swirly colors).

Once your figure is formed, it's time to create a color palette. I wanted a muted, grungy palette, so I mixed a lot of brown and grey into my colors.

Finally, you sculpt up your character! I'd recommend not adding too much detail, because once you start animating, your fingers are only going to smash it away. I'm still pretty new to stop-motion, so let me know if you have any other clay modelling tips.

Have a bloody good time!

Camp Grizzly This Weekend at Kubla Con

THE SCARIEST BOARDGAME OF ALL TIME IS FINALLY HERE.

Camp Grizzly, the debut title of Ameritrash Games, is a horror/survival boardgame for 1-6 players. The objective is to survive a night at camp with a supernatural serial killer on the loose! If this appeals to you: first seek help, then seek us out this weekend at Kubla Con in the Hyatt Regency SFO where we'll be selling beta versions of the game!

Ameritrash is a partner of Zombiesmith Games, one of the sponsors of Kubla Con. My co-creator, Jason Topolski, and I will both be available at the Zombiesmith Games booth Saturday-Monday, running games, doing drawings, and generally indulging in all manners of mischief and debauchery!
Ameritrash Games can be round at AmeritrashGames.com and here on Facebook.

Happy Birthday to Eric Hann and Jason Topolski

I love doing birthday cards because it's an excellent way to both roast and honor a buddy. The first card is for a pal I've known since highschool. He's a huge fan of Starbucks and Indiana Jones, but I wasn't going to do the kindness of caricaturing him as the hero himself. Plus, this scene between Belloq and Marion really captures Eric's relationship with his wife, Alexa.

The second card was for my buddy Jason, who is co-creating a horror-themed boardgame with me. Naturally, I had to make him his own player card!

That's our game's killer, Otis, preparing to kill Jason with the film stock of the very movie that the game is parodying. It's game-ception.

First Day of Class

It's first day of class for our Fall Semester at the Academy of Art University, which means printing up a fresh batch of inspiration packets (art compliments of the great Tom Gately) and a fresh horrifying paint job at the Academy.

The paint scheme is already having adverse effects on our students.

Can't wait to see what effect an entire semester in this crimson nightmare will have on my psyche. Stay tuned!

8-bit Cubism

Last weekend was a huge gaming marathon at my buddy Jay's house for his birthday. After about seven board games, I was getting a bit distracted.

Luckily, Space Alert came with these little wooden counters which I quickly discovered could be made into 8-bit characters, like Devo here.

Or kicking Devo.

When our Space Alert battle station was attacked by an Interstellar Octopus, my solution was to send Boba Fett after the beast (though he hasn't fared particularly well against tentacled monsters in the past).

I quickly progressed to Frolicking Fidel Castro...

...The Grinch...

...Lorne...

...More abstract depictions of Santa Claus/Pokeball, Yoda, and The Creeper...

 ...And, of course, Jurassic Park.

We didn't win the game, but the 8-bit characters were a fun exercise and well worth the distraction. I heartily recommend Space Alert, if only for the 8-bit art potential!

The Skywalking Dead

My friend Molly participated in last weekend's Polar Plunge. Her team was Zombie/Star Wars themed, so I felt obliged to illustrate my take on the subject matter.

Drawn on the iPad with Sketchbook Pro.

The Emeryville Horror

At Pixar, no one can hear you scream...unfortunately, everyone can hear you sing.

Our theatre troupe, The Improvibles, is doing a horror musical this Friday. I know it's supposed to be an entirely improvized performance, but I'm already planning to launch into this song as our show closer.

CHADES CHALLENGE LX: JUBILANT VAN HELSINGS

When you've survived the depths of macabre that Abraham Van Helsing has, there isn't much jubilation left in your soul. Here the professor is, absolutely elated at having rid the world of its last sparkly emo vampire. Abe may not be the kind of guy you'd invite to a party, but he's the first one you want there when you notice one of your guests doesn't cast a reflection in your living room mirror.

If you have any Jubilant Van Helsings, let me know and I'll post them below. Otherwise, you can join in October 21st for...

CHADES CHALLENGE LIX: FERAL SPIRITS

"He's looking at me, Ray."

Slimer may not be "feral" in the wilderness sense, but he's not your typical domestic specter, either. Really, I'm just excited about the upcoming theatrical rerelease of Ghostbusters. Plus, Slimer is fun to draw.

If you have any feral spirits, let me know and I'll post them below. Otherwise, you can join us October 7th for:

Welcome to Camp Grizzly

Days at camp without accident: 364

My friend Jason and I have been working on a slasher-themed board game. We're still about a year from release but we'll be beta testing the  in-progress version this weekend at Kubla Con. If you're there, swing by the Zombiesmith booth and give the game a kick in the tires.

That is, if you're not scared...
