The Loki Pokey

I thought I'd start this Thor's Day morning with a little chaos.

This was a doodle I did during a particularly chaotic production meeting where I thought a little Loki was setting in. I "borrowed" the sweet action-lined backdrop from Differentbeans.99k.org.

Man of Steel meets Man of Iron

If I was Iron Man, I'd consider installing a rocketpack just to cut back on the RSI.

Smiles, Scales, Webs, and Claws.

Dinosaurs are usually my default doodle, but since I draw them all day on The Good Dinosaur, you're going to see a lot of my second favorite subject: superheroes.

Little-known fact: Joker only has the second largest smile of any Batman villain. First place goes to Killer Croc.

Super or no, even Peter Parker has to do his oblique workouts.

Has anyone done the triple slashes for the Wolverine logo? Seems kinda obvious.

This concludes today's installment of super sketches. Any requests for supers I should sketch?

Chades Challenge LXXIV: Shiny Sleds

Before he adopted the cosmic surfboard, the herald of Galactus was known as The Silver Sledder!

As always, the Chades (Character Design) Challenge is open to anyone who wants to contribute. If you have a shiny sled design of your own, let me know and I'll post your art below. Otherwise, you can join in January 11th for...

Mrs. America and Frau Redskull

My buddy Everett does a Daughter Drawing of the Day where his daughter tells him exactly what she wants drawn. Like Captain America...and his family...in swimsuits.

I love the idea of a Rosie the Riveter-type Mrs. America.

...but as Sir Isaac Newton says, to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So here is Mrs America's equal and opposite: Frau Redskull.

I can't wait to draw her squad of assassin cheerleaders, the Ditzkrieg.

Chades Challenge LXVII: Spider-man's New Sidekick

I can't say I designed a character this week, more like I plussed my buddy Vi's design (see below). I liked his idea, and it immediately brought some ideas to mind.

When researching Tarantulas, I came across this actual Spider-man villain, Tarantula. He has a mustache, but it's not nearly as mandibular as it should be!

If you have any designs of your own, let me know and I'll post them below. As always, all are welcome to contribute! Otherwise, you can join in August 24th for...

CHADES CHALLENGE LXVIII:
CAPTIVE FRONTIERSMEN

I think it's safe to say that all of these designs are better and more appropriately-themed than Spider-man's official new sidekick, Alpha:

The kid's got electric powers, because y'know, spiders and electricity.

SDCC Yearbook

I brought a moleskine to Comic Con this year.

The initial idea was to sketch the local wildlife.

When I ran into Doug TenNapel, I offered him a sketch trade.

Doug happily agreed! I asked him to illustrate the theme "Comic Con". This beauty is what he came up with:

I loved the sketch so much, I decided to offer my moleskine to other friends/heroes of mine to see their take on the theme. Before long, I had a yearbook of amazing artwork. Here are a few samples!

Cory Walker's sketch wasn't actually in the sketchbook, it was a commission my girlfriend got for me. Between the yearbook and the commission, it was a damn good year for SDCC souvenirs!

My Brother, the Iron Man

My brother, Andy, is always looking for ways to expand his crime-fighting arsenal. So, for his birthday, I got him Iron Man's bracelets from The Avengers (available at Think Geek).

Andy enjoys the occasional skydive, so I figured the Iron Man bracelet would come in handy under less-than-favorable circumstances...

Happy Birthday, Andy! And many safe returns!

The Avengers Reaches a Billion!

"You have saved our lives! We are eternally grateful!"

This week, The Avengers joined Transformers, The Deathly Hallows, and Toy Story 3 on the other side of the $1 billion mark. Congrats to Joss Whedon and his team for a fantastic film and all the well-deserved accolades.

Flashkick

More X-Men sketches. This is my buddy Tim's character, Flashkick, who has the ability to open rifts in space time through which she can teleport, or just reach out and slap someone from across the room. (Sketch by Everett Downing)

The original concept was a bit too Jubilee-ish. So we traded in the 90's jacket for the traditional unitard. (Sketch by Ev)

She's an ESL student from Korea. Her lack of communication skills have made it difficult to correct the constant mangling of her callsign. (Sketch by Emma Coats)

Meatbag

Last week, my friends and I played an X-Men RPG. Rather than play classic characters, we decided to create our own team! This is Meatbag, who's mutation is prehensile flesh. Yeah, gross. (Sketch by Ev Downing)

The character went through several interpretations including the gumdrop-like ginger above. We figured if Meatbag could control his skin, he would have whatever body type he wanted. (Sketch by me)

So, while he may usually look like Russell from Up, he might be able to shift into Brandon Lee mode should any ladies appear. (Sketch by Mach Kobayashi)

Chades Challenge LXXI: The Avengers

Now this is the Avengers movie I want to see. Diana Rigg as Black Widow and a Hulked-out Patrick MacNee--now that would be a jolly good show!

If you have any Avengers concepts of your own, let me know and I'll post them below. Otherwise, join in May 4th for...

Impulse

Paul's character in this week's X-Men RPG was the excitable youth, Impulse. Impulse is a big fan of the X-Men and can't wait to be part of the team. There's one Canadian hero he looks up to in particular.

Impulse's mutation is lighting-fast reflexes, bordering on precognition. This skill is particularly handy in the Danger Room, where there's a surprise around every corner.

Like assassin drones...
Sync gets a little irritated by Impulse's fanboy behavior sometimes, but ultimately recognizes his value as part of the team.
Tomorrow, I'll be taking a break from the X-Men sketches and switching to another part of the Marvel Universe for Chades Challenge LXXI: The Avengers!
