The Greatest Rock and Roll Song of All-Time
OR
ROCK'N'POLL

I've been talking with Nate, Rob, and Vi about what constitutes a great rock'n'roll song. Specifically, what constitutes the GREATEST ROCK'N'ROLL SONG OF ALL-TIME. So for the next six weeks, I'll be polling to find the greatest single song of each of the seventeen rock genres.

There are eighteen rock genres, and seven songs per genre. Swing on by every Monday and choose your favorite song in each of three weekly contending polls.

I admit that my rock knowledge is shabby at best, so the last genre will be fan favorites. This will include tour de forces that I have either forgotten, or that you have insisted that I include in the battle.

At the end of the six weeks, the champions of each genre (eighteen total!) will contend in an ultimate battle of the bands. May the best song win.

Can I Choose More Than One?

Yes you may!
Each poll represents one genre (ie oldeis, heavy metal, psychedelic, soft rock, folk). Choose one song per genre.

At the end of the polls, the reigning song from each genre will face off in a seventeen-way battle royale.

These are tough. It is hard to constitute exactly what is an oldie, heavy metal, or psychedelic.

For Oldies, I would have to say Elvis and Chuck were the engineers, but I have to go with Chuck since Elvis's earliest hits were all songs written by black musicians; including "Hound Dog." I love the Kinks but they are more reminisent of things to come.

Your Metal choices were all great Metal bands but I may have chosen a couple different songs. For example, with Led Zepplin I would have gone for "Black Dog." I also might have included Slayer's "Reign in Blood," Megadeth's "Holy Wars/The Punishment Due," and Deep Purples "Smoke on the Water."

For Psychedlic rock I would have included anything Pink Floyd. I may have also mentioned The Beatles "Stawberrry Fields."

I only go on this connaisseur
because I consider myself to be music connaisseur. Good way to start a discussion; everyone has there opinions.

Hey Josh! Rob told me you're quite the guitarist. Thanks for the recommendations, I'm happy to say that most of the songs you've mentioned will be contesting in later genres such as prog rock, hard rock, classic rock and death metal. And like I said, songs that haven't been 'placed' will have their chance in the final Fan Favorites round.
Stay tuned and rock on!

bowie, floyd, and zeppelin. dark side of the moon is nothing short of an epic soul journey. ..and who could ever possibly be more truly ROCK AND ROLL than david bowie? ..okay, maybe robert plant. also -- i know lots of folks will disagree with me on this one, but i think the doors are a cheap imitation.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!
Thanks for correcting the genre of Paint it Black Hattermad. Like I said, I'm pretty uneducated in the ways of rock, so I was using Wikipedia's categorization.

Laura Jane-not to worry, Floyd and Bowie are on their way!
